Not sure if the MC is alarmed or comforted by his amended view. To me these hills/mountains are a symbol of Mother Nature sickened.
The hills/mountains in the picture actually look like a desert or arid area to me, not necessarily sickened. The MC's new impression is a metaphor for his upcoming experience in a land that's familiar yet strange to him. Thanks for the comment!
