Flash fiction
He was returning to the land where he’d been raised, yet knew he was now a stranger there. Too much had changed - his family, the community, himself.
He drove alone on the inbound highway, other cars passing in the outbound lanes, how symbolic. The warning sign about wildlife crossings hadn’t changed, and the mountains ahead looked as drab as ever.
Yet he noticed something new about those mountains. Their uneven rounded peaks looked like gently rolling waves on a sea of brown. “Huh,” he said.
The road flowed into a right-hand curve, and he steered into the familiar bend.

Not sure if the MC is alarmed or comforted by his amended view. To me these hills/mountains are a symbol of Mother Nature sickened.
